National President’s Note
September 15, 2020
Fellow Navy Leaguer,
Earlier this year, your volunteer leadership stood up an ad hoc strategic planning committee to craft a vision and focus for our organization. The outcome of that critical work has been released and is available on our website titled, “National President’s 2020 Guidance.” Its purpose is to guide our organization with better focus as we work to prioritize our goals and carry out our mission.
In it, you will find clear guidelines about our organization’s priority focus areas as we continue to support and advocate for the sea services. As the document states, when everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. These focus areas will give us that ability to home in on what is important to keep our organization on mission.
We encourage all to read, understand and practice these principles so that we may all row as one, guiding the Navy League into the future as a team.
The three councils in Connecticut (Western Connecticut, Hartford and Easter Connecticut) have joined to form one Navy League council for the state of Connecticut. We welcome the brand-new Connecticut Council to the Navy League and wish them the best as they handle the work of three former councils.
Greater Austin Council
The Greater Austin Council’s Distinguished Speaker Series returns on Sept. 16, only this time virtually via Zoom. This month’s speaker will be Capt. Mark Liebman, former naval aviator and author, speaking about naval lessons learned from the American Revolution.
Greater Kansas City Council
The Greater Kansas City Council just launched a new and improved website designed to better inform members about the ongoings of the council and the needs of the sea services. Take a look!

Minnesota Council board member Joyce Lacey organized a drive-by birthday salute to World War II Navy veteran Iver Anderson, on Sept. 12. Nearly three dozen people decorated their cars to drive by and wish Iver a wonderful 98th birthday.

The sixth annual Navy Mile at the nation’s capital is still a go, at least virtually. Sign up online for the National Capital Council’s Oct. 1-13 virtual run, where you can choose your challenge and record your time!
New York Council
The New York Council hosted a virtual event in honor of the maritime heroes of 9/11, in partnership with the Transportation Institution and Turnstile Tours. Newport Beach Council
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal and the Newport Beach Council honored Petty Officer 3rd Class Thomas Kenny with the Sailor of the Year award for the first half of 2020. Read more about his accomplishments on the Navy League blog.
